Kids and Teachers On the Edge: Homelessness and Transiency in Our Public Schools

This is quite a beautifully written article, Scott, about a vitally important topic. For obvious reasons, I sympathize with the kids. As a special ed teacher myself, I have seen what negative impact homelessness and transiency have. A few days ago I learned that one one of my students, a girl three years below grade level and in such poor health her tooth crumbled while I was giving a lesson, a kid who nonetheless had started to make academic strides through sheer strength of will, was suddenly, inexplicably gone. The same thing will probably happen at the next school she goes to and the next and the next. It is so important that people know that there are more and more kids like her, as your article shows. But beyond that, the fact that the teachers also live on the edge is a vitally important point to make. Many teachers are as poor as the poorest kids they teach. Layoffs, school closings and privatization only exacerbate the problem, which has become a national shame. Thank you for the great reporting…
